FIRST LION PRESIDENT OF NEPAL
The first Lion President of Nepal, Late Lion Matrika Prasad Koirala was
born on 1st January 1912 in Biratnagar, Morang, the eastern part of Nepal.
He took the opportunity to become the First Lion President of Nepal by
establishing the Lions Club of Biratnagar in 1971. Lion P.C. Jain of LC Ajmer
was the extension chairperson of Lions Club of Biratnagar.
Lion Koirala was a well known political leader. Apart from his political
background, he had an immense involvement in social areas as well.
In 1953, he established Nepal Tuberculosis Eradication Association and
became the founder vice president. He was also the member of the Nepal
Red Cross Society, Biratnagar from the beginning and subsequently
held the position of President. He was the founder chairman of Morang
Higher Education Development Trust. In course of his social career, he
had established Koirala Memorial Child Trust.
He had actively contributed and assisted in constructing Tribhuwan
Memorial Hospital building, Ratna Maitri Sadan Red Cross building,
Blood Bank building etc. He was very active in politics and assisted his
father Mr. Krishna Prasad Koirala in the political movement of Nepal. He
was the executive chairman of Nepalese National Congress in 1948. He
was a successful commander of 1950 democratic revolution. He was also
the founder president of Rastriya Praja Party and established National
Janata Parishad in 1991 B.S.
Lion Koirala had greatly contributed in the field of literature. He was a man
of high oratory power and recognized as one of the famed contemporary
in Nepali. He had a good command over English, Hindi, Urdu, Bengali,
Maithali, Rajasthani(Marwari), Bhojpuri languages.
After the downfall of Rana Regime in 1950, Lion Matrika Prasad Koirala was
the Prime Minister from the General public. He held the position of Prime
Minister during fifties. He was nominated as a permanent representative of
United Nations Organization and was appointed as Nepal's Ambassador
to United States of America from 1961-1964. He was an honest, sincere,
polite and kindhearted person.
